There's at least one entire universe full of notions regarding why anything is and is not musical and, presumably, worth anyone's time to listen to. I say, who cares how it's justified as long as it's listened to, assuming it's worth listening to. But you won't know that until you try.
It doesn't matter to the universe what any of us thinks is music but don't let that keep you from appreciating it where ever you manage to find it.
And I think you'd find a lot more of it if you started making it yourself and giving it to others.
Call me crazy but it seems to me that everybody likes a good song and most will put up with a halfway decent one if its performed halfway decently. If it's time then return the favor by putting yourself out on a limb and contributing one for us to enjoy. You must have something to say that's worth beating into a rhyme.
Like it or not, that you seek music suggests you have the potential to express it yourself. I fear that if you don't find some way of expressing yourself in what may be the only common native language all humans share then you're going to go mad. It may already be too late.
Nah. Just get to work.
Even if you don't know how to express it in technical terms like the pros do, you know what you like. You can make music without being able to explain it. You already know this though you may have learned to believe you can't.
When it comes to music and the various theories regarding acceptability or excellence, there are so many exceptions to the rules that all the rules together are little more than the exception to the larger rule that "anything goes" as long as someone is willing to listen to it, assuming they can find it to listen to it, which is another issue entirely.
Be that as it may, this is one of those notions presented in a novel way demonstrating a methodology you may employ to produce compelling songs of your own for others to listen to, since it's probably time you got off your butt and contributed to the great body of songs that comprise the most enduring stories of our time.
Face it, people are still singing olds songs but precious few remember old news. In the days of troubadours everyone sang the news which made it considerably easier for everyone to remember and follow developing events. You can be a part of that hallowed tradition if you can write a song about something other than you libido. It might even be better than sex. It's bound to be more gratifying than being on the news.
There was music before there were words to describe it and there's been music because there were rules to guide it. There's even music because there are rules to rebel against. That's all well and good if you prefer musical theory over practice. If not, it time to play.
